Free Audio Transcript Editor with Timestamped Captions
Turn your own listening notes into a structured transcript. Open an audio file or record through your microphone, slow down playback, mark times, and type what you hear. Export captions as SRT or VTT, or save a TXT draft. This is manual transcription, not automatic speech recognition.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
How do I use the audio transcript editor?
Choose an audio recording from your device or record with permission. Listen using the built-in player, adjust playback speed, then add a timestamped segment at the current position. Enter the spoken words, correct the start and end times, and repeat. Download TXT for readable notes or SRT/VTT for caption editing.
Use the tool as described above, then check the result against its limitations before using it elsewhere. Copy, export and print actions differ by tool. Do not assume a browser-saved value is a secure backup.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
When is this tool useful?
Useful for interviews, classes, podcast notes, meetings, language practice, accessibility caption preparation, or assembling time-coded quotations when accuracy matters and you prefer to retain control of the original recording.
Choose inputs that describe the actual task. If you are comparing results over time, keep the method, units and settings consistent.
EXPLORE THE DETAILS
A closer look at Audio Transcript Editor
What is a timestamped transcript?
A transcript records spoken content in written form. Timestamped segments associate each passage with a position in the recording, making it easier to locate quotes and prepare subtitles. A text transcript often includes one paragraph per speaker, while subtitle files break speech into shorter timed sections.
What is the difference between SRT and WebVTT?
SRT subtitle files use numbered caption blocks with timestamps formatted as hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds separated by commas. WebVTT files begin with WEBVTT and use periods in timestamps. Both can be edited after export; supported caption behavior varies by video player or publishing platform.
How do audio recordings stay private?
The editor uses a local browser media element and object URLs. Selecting a file does not send its audio bytes to a ToolsRoom transcription service. Mic recordings use the browser MediaRecorder interface and can be downloaded to your device. Other browser extensions, system software and the hosting website environment are outside this tool’s control.
How should I improve transcription accuracy?
Listen through each difficult passage more than once, reduce playback speed as needed, verify names and numbers, and avoid guessing words that are unclear. If captions are meant for publication, check reading speed, segment boundaries, speaker labeling and accessibility expectations.
Can I continue a transcript later?
Use Save draft JSON to download your transcript segments. Import JSON draft later to restore time markers and text; load the original audio separately. Audio itself is not embedded in the JSON so the saved file remains small.
ACCURACY & PRIVACY
Important details and limitations
The tool does not automatically recognize uploaded speech. You must type, verify and timestamp the transcript. Audio files and recorded audio are not uploaded by this feature. The tool works only on audio formats your browser can decode and microphone recording requires browser permission and HTTPS. Draft JSON exports do not include the audio file.
Some ToolsRoom utilities keep progress in local browser storage. That is convenient for repeat visits on the same device, but it is not an online account or a backup. Clearing browser data, changing devices or using private browsing can remove saved information. Export important results when supported.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions about Audio Transcript Editor
Does this tool automatically convert speech to text?
No. It provides a working manual transcription and caption-editing workspace, not automatic speech recognition.
Does the website upload my audio?
The editor processes recordings locally in the browser and does not send the chosen audio to a transcription service.
Can I generate SRT and VTT captions?
Yes. Add and verify the timed transcript segments, then choose Download SRT or Download VTT.
Can I record from a microphone?
Yes, in browsers that support MediaRecorder and allow microphone access on a secure HTTPS page.
Can I save a draft and finish later?
Yes. Download a JSON transcript draft and reimport it later. You must reopen the audio file separately.
Can I change playback speed?
Yes. Options include 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5× and 2×.
Why is no transcript generated automatically?
Accurate automatic audio recognition needs a compatible local speech engine or server-based model. This API-free version deliberately offers an honest, functional manual workflow.
Is this free online tool available on mobile?
Yes. ToolsRoom is designed for modern mobile and desktop browsers, though some output options depend on your device and browser features.
